Frozen Cherries

Hi all,

I want to make a recipe that calls for 5 lbs of cherries. As I live in the Northeast, fresh cherries are not in season. I've looked all over, but cannot find frozen cherries at any local grocer. Any ideas how one can find frozen cherries, either online or mail-order? Anyone know a grocery chain that usually does carry cherries? Thanks.

I actually just did the same thing about a week ago. They hide the cherries in the freezer section by the desserts or whipped topping usually, you just have to look a little harder. In the Northeast you can try Tops, Wegmans, etc. They all have them. Wegmans has them for $3/lb with no preservatives or sugar added.

Thanks. My wife was able to find them, she knows her way around the store much better. Cherries were $4/lb.

I say, five pounds of cherries is a lot. Do you know how many gallons that is? It might be helpful to know I used a gallon of huckleberries and it overpowered the flavor. Couldn't taste any hops what-so-ever, and I used a lot, though maybe I screwed up in preserving the fresh-hops though I didn't think anything happened to them as all the lupins were still clearly bright yellow. Just my two cents, Sincerely, gcitagh

I appreciate the spot you are in. I just started a recipe that calls for 7 lbs off fresh peeled appricots. Not an easy item to find. Ended up using Chilean Nectarines... i think it will work. As for the cherries, I did a little looking. There is a place in Wisconsin that sells frozen/canned cherries (Door County). They look to be out this time of year. Possibly give one of the orchards a phone call and ask? Here is a link to one of the sites:

Good luck. Might want to try frozen raspberries?

Thanks for the advice guys. I ended up just shelling out the $20 for cherries at my local Giant Eagle. Hopefully 5 lbs won't be overpowering in a stout. They were whole cherries, as opposed to puree, so very little of that weight is water. I think it brought my liquid level up about a half gallon. I used 2 oz of 7.0 aa hops, so hopefully that is enough to balance the cherry flavor.
