higher APV

I,ve made about 10 beer kits now using barons and coopers, all have turned out very well. quite enjoyable. however, when I put this latest kit on I wanted to check the alcohol content, and it turns out that the APV is only about 3.9% using a coopers pilsner and 2.7 pounds of corn sugar,. with all my other kits I've used very close to the same amount of sugar, so I assume the APV is very close to the same in all the kits. I would like to increase my APV to about 5 to 6% without ruining the taste of the brew. could anyone tell me what to do in order to increase the APV. of my brew to this point, thanks for any help that you can provide.thanks to all, denny, I read every post that you make, and I find them very informative. thanks

You're not adding quite enough sugar for a high-alcohol brew. Instead of adding just 2.7 pounds of sugar, try using an entire extra beer kit (2 cans instead of 1). This is how I started out, and I made some good high strength brews using this method. Alternatively, you can buy liquid or dry malt extract... simply add an extra 3 to 5 pounds of extract and/or corn sugar, and maybe a small amount of extra hops to balance the malt (0.5 ounce?), and you will have a high-strength beer with nice body and ABV of 5 to 7%. It's all about the sugar. More sugar (or malt extract), more alcohol.
