How long will it usually take to ferment? (Gravity Reading Question)

The recipe calls for a fermentation period of 3 to 7 days and a final gravity reading of 1.008 - 1.010. After 7 days bubbling stopped completely and the gravity came out to 1.100. It has now been 4 days since the bubbling has stopped and the gravity has yet to decrease. Anyone have any ideas?

If your gravity reading is REALLY 1.100, something is drastically wrong with your measurement. That's in the range of the starting gravity for a strong beer like a barleywine. In general, the fermentation schedules given with recipes are nothing more than wild guesses. The schedule depends on the beer, not the recipe. If the gravity doesn't change foir

3 days or so, that's a pretty good sign fermentation is finished. Check the gravity again and get back to us.

You are certainly off by a decimal point. Check again.... if I had a million dollars, I'd bet it all that your gravity reading is actually 1.010, not 1.100. 1.100 is RIDICULOUSLY high.

I normally use my own way and I have never had a problem. When it stops to bubble, I wait for another 2 weeks and only after that I bottle my beer.

You are all so very right. After reading your posts and studying the hydrometer, I was able to understand how it worked. Your are correct Mr. Taylor, the actual reading was 1.010, and since the recipe calls for a final gravity reading of 1.008 - 1.010, I went ahead and bottled it. Thank you all for your information.

Yours truly,

Luke
