Layers?

I tried using gelatine finings for the first time, I was told that it produced a very clear batch of beer. So I racked my latest batch to a second carboy, I prepared and added the gelatine as instructed on the package, and after a few days the brew seems to have settled into very noticeable layers, top inch being very clear, the next layer is a little darker and the bottom half is darker yet.

I've only home brewed three other times and this is the first time I see this. Is it normal?

Yes, it sounds like the gelatin worked. It may take some time to clear up completely. If you keep the beer as cool as possible for a week or two, the cloudy stuff should settle down to the bottom more and leave you with a nice clear brew. When you're ready to bottle, you'll need to take care not to disturb the bottom layers to keep your beer as clear as possible.
