Oatmeal in the Wort

If one puts oatmeal, like say 1/2 lb. into the wort while boiling, what can
one generally expect out of the beer (in other words, what kind of
characteristics will it give the beer)?

It depends on the style of the beer, in a stout I use it all the time and it
gives it a smooth creamy character.
