Starter Question

I have brewed up a ton of beer, but always used new yeast. Some times dry, sometimes liquid.

I believe I have the right idea about starter, whip up a bit of wort, add yeast let set a day or two and presto! Things happen quick.

Question is how long can starter be held, and what is the most appropriate method.

For example, if I make four cups of starter (1/4 liter) and use 3/4 of that amount then add an amount of wort to restore the 4 cups and toss it in the fridge (assuming all the sanitation is good) how long can I expect the starter to last?

Thanks

I usually make 2 liter starters. If I read you right you wanna store a starter, well I wouldnt hold one in a fridge for more than six months. Sure you can do it longer, a year or so, but youll get better results the other way.

If your talking about saving yeast from aprevious batch 6 months is a good number aswell. Truthfully I find it better to make a starter in preperation for a recent brewing session. Pitching the yeast at its peak ferment I find to give better results, less lag. If you made a starter and couldnt get to your session, six months is a good number to go by.

I agree with Heath. Its best to make a starter right before brewing. Here are a couple of links for getting started.
