Steam Lager

Hiya! I need a recipe for a Steam lager. My bf's birthday is coming up and I was going to buy him the ingredients to make some beer. (He had been brewing frequently but due to home improvements hasn't made any beer yet this season) He usually makes 5 gallon batches. I'd appreciate any recipes you can offer! Thanks!! Spryte

1 lb. 60 Lov. Crystal malt 6 lb. light DME 6.5 AAU Northern Brewer hop pellets (60 min) 6.5 AAU Northern Brewer pellets (15 min) 6.5 AAU Northern Brewer pellets (0 min) California lager yeast (White Labs WLP-810 San Francisco Lager or Wyeast 2112 California Lager)

Since it sounds like you are not a brewer yourself, AAUs (alpha acid units) are equal to the number of ounces used multiplied by the alpha acid content of the hops. They will be listed right on the package or the homebrew supply shop owner will tell you if the hops aren't individually packaged. Your boyfriend will know what to do, but when you buy them, if the hops have

6.4% alpha acids or higher, get an ounce of each. If they are a lot lower, you'd need to get more than one ounce. Northern Brewer hops are typically about 6.5% alpha acid, so you shouldn't really worry about it.

Also, DME is dried malt extract and is readily available. If the shop doesn't carry DME (unlikely), you'd want to get about 7 or 8 pounds of liquid malt extract (LME).

It's cool to see a girlfriend who actually supports and encourages brewing. Got any sisters? : )

He's done both... I think the all grain was fun... So which ever you think is a better recipe is cool =)

Nope.. I'm not a brewer! And I don't even like beer! But it's so much fun to help him make it. (and I like to sneak tastes of the wort (sp?) I think he should brew all year and as soon as a buy a new fridge, I'm hoping to convince him to use the old one for year round brewing and/or lagering. Thanks for all the tips and we do have a really good HB store guy that should be able to help me with things you mentioned. Yes I do have a sister.. hehe.. but she has a bf too.. hehehe... =) Thanks again for your help!!
