Such a Newbie

OK, this is funny!

I just finished my first batch. I bought a kit to keep it simple and get me used to the process. Well, I'm glad I did.....

First, I killed my yeast by pitching it too hot; then, my funnel was too tight to the top of the carboy (not allowing an open "carb") and it leaked down the side loosing precious wort; then, I pushed the rubber stopper INTO the carboy when I capped it trying to agitate the newly aquired yeast I just pitched. Now I'm gonna have to figure out how to get it out after I rack......

Not to worry, I'm confident my second wil go smoothly. I guess one has to start somewhere!

Great post. Not everyone can use the results of their first batch to educate fellow HBers. Most of the experienced crowd would admit to the same mistakes. Other than my sympathy for suffering through such a miserable experience, I can only provide guidance on the stopper issue. First, you take a hammer...

just kidding. Actually, after emptying the container (that's important), take a towel, fold corner to approximate a funnel. Stuff corner into container so there is a something the stopper can fall into. Turn container upside down. Bounce the stopper around a bit until it falls into the towel. Pull it out. Don't repeat liberally.

Better luck next time. It really does get more fun. The stories are a big part of it as well.

Oh, I didn't make myself completely clear. Use a sturdy cloth towel. It should be strong enough.
