Tap lube???

Have my tap apart. Can't find any info on tap lube, other than "buy my product". Anything around the house that would work well. I would guess that I need to be concerned with o-rings going bad, and of course flavor transfer.

If you're worried about O-rings then use some Keg Lube. You can pick it up at your LHBS but if you don't have one, try to use something similar fron HD. Be sure its food grade.

What would be similar? Any idea of what the base compound is? I was considering using glycerin, but am worried about a sweet flavor being imparted into the brew.

Generic keg lube is usually one of two things, silicone compound (grease/lubricant), or petrol gel. The differences between silicone compound and petrol gel are the price, and some of the properties. The price of petrol gel is about 6 times less than the price of silicone compound. Petrol gel also can inhibit head retention.

Some suggested replacements have been Vaseline, and KY Jelly. Vaseline can be used, but it does not have the properties of being tasteless and odorless. KY Jelly is water soluble, and could become dissolved in the beer. It also dries over time, and would not be a good choice.

Hope that helps, Wild

Yes, very much. Thank-you. Has anyone tried a mineral oil (as opposed to petroleum) based compound? That would seem to be more food grade. But I imagine the same problem with head retention would be at issue.

I'm sorry, I don't know why I didn't mention this before but it states on the Petro Gel label that it is U.S.P. Mineral Oil along with other USP ingredients. See

They even offer a free sample on the site. Be careful, I have seen mention of it causing a flat head.

Just use "Vaseline" sparingly, this is a white petroleum jelly, purchase at your local pharmacy. It will not deteriorate most O ring materials. Pete
