tastes like beer :>

I bottled my first batch two weeks ago (a John Bull kit Porter), and today I got so impatient and curious that I just HAD to crack one open and try it out. It gave a little "pssst" when I opened it, nothing strange was floating in it, and by golly, it tasted like BEER. :>

It's a little flat yet, and still has a bit of a "harsh" taste to it, but I think after another week or two of aging it'll be just fine.

I've christened it "Viking Piss Porter".

Hi also a newbie here ;-) We`re in Fla too and our Publix carries Yeungling Porter, have you tired there? Also I see you did a "no-boil kit", we have done 4 batchs so far using Brewers Best kits, so far the Hefeweizen and the Oktober Fest have been great. The hefeweizen we made 50/50 plain- blueberry and mmmm that was nice, the oktober fest is good too- I cracked some early and its just fine. We just bottled some russian imp. stout tonight and our 2nd batch of hefeweizen has another 2 weeks or so to go till I crack a bottle. Monday we`re going to get a couple more brewers best kits, need to get a nice stockpile built up :-) We`ll try using some white labs yeast in our hefeweizen instead of the kit(nottingham brand) to see how that affects the flavor.

The Publix near me doesn't have it. Unless someone else has always been buying it before I see it. :> But I'd been told that Yeungling doesn't make porter anymore . . .

I've been using the John Bull master class kit. It's the simplest process to follow and I figured there was less chance of messing it up.

I'm not so sure that fruit-flavored beer would be to my liking -- though *caffeinated* beer might not be a bad idea.

I think the next batch I try will be a pale ale.

For my first batch I managed to wait only for two days and it was already reasonably good beer.

Looks like you have steel nerves to wait for two weeks ;)

Nottingham. Hef yeasts throw esters and some phenols. Tastes usually described as banana, pineapple bubblegum (esters) clove and spice (phenolic). Be very careful with temp control, especially at the start of fermentation. It would be in your best interest to brew 5-10 degrees lower than that recommended by white labs just in case you don't like the flavours. Others may be able help more. Steve w.

See if you can find Sierra Nevada Pale Ale anywhere. If you've never had an American PA, it'll be different - it tastes like grapefruit.

Making your own is pretty simple if you don't mind boiling.

VERY young for a porter.

That's the definitive test - if you like it, you did good.

I'd save at least one bottle to age for a couple of months. Just to see the difference. You might be surprised.

Hmm, I dunno if I can go THAT long without opening it . . . I'd better get a second batch going ASAP. :>

That's the only problem with brewing. There's always that next batch that you have to make.
