I buy microbrewery beer, (such as Widmer, Fat Tire, etc.), when I need bottles. I drain the contents, (down my gullet, of course), and soak the lables off. I kind of like the bottles from Pete's that say 'Wicked' on them. I have purchased new 12 oz. bottles from the local brew shop, but they charge $12 for a case of 24. So for another fifty or sixty cents each, I can get them full of beer. ;) Of course, the cheapest bottles will be used ones at the recycling drop off or a distributor. But often times, those can be quite filthy.

I'm partial to Samuel Adams bottles, not for any particular reason other than that's what I started with and I'm kind of a stickler for uniformity. I too have purchased from the local HBS, but only when I have to for the very same reasons you mentioned.

12 bucks for a case of 12oz bottles? Did they see you coming or what!!!

I buy my bottles at 35 bucks/5 cases. Much better deal!

Get your hands on a kegging system and toss the bottles in the recycler.

Keg system + extra fridge = $$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!

Toss the keg idea in the trash and get some Grolsch bottles. Who cares if they're green either, just keep them in the dark, how hard is that to do?

  1. Keg
  2. Grolsch bottles.. they hold more than normal bottles.. no caps needed. Green looks ugly.. brown or blue bottles.

the set up for keging is a bit expensive but was worth it to me for the ease benefits no washing bottles no broken bottles no filling bottles no missing bottles and no capping problems

Disadvanges Maintence and cost of running a spare frig.

Grosh bottle a bit expensive but the side perk of the good beer to drink is a plus

Disadvantages Missing bottles at party's and events cost of replacement seals

Standard bottles cheapest and easy to get disadvantages the most work, bad seals and bottle cleaning more work

my system was a bit expensive to build even with a free frig as I upgraded mine so it was a spare but I did put in 4 Cory kegs with one set up for stout with a separate no/co2 tank and stout facet curently I got a pale ale a octberfest ale and root beer put a dark stout
