Yum Yum

Well Despite all of the problems I have had, I've now tried my first beer and all I can happily say it is a success :D

I say it is a success, it looks and tastes great.

In preparation for my next brew, I have ensured I have more stuff. I have bought a hydrometer and an airlock (I was advised against both of these when buying new kit).

Question 1: Will the hydrometer give me the approx alcohol content of my finished beer (I did try and this showed to be about 2%)?

Question 2: The airlock had a little plastic cap which I have appeared to have lost. Is this needed?

Thanks for all the previous help and advise in allowing me to achieve a beer I can enjoy. Pleased with my first result and hoping my next is even better.... Even if the alcohol content is a lot lower than I hoped for I am still enjoying it. Guess it just means I can drink more and not get drunk!!!

Answer 1: To get the ABV measure the starting gravity (SG) and then the finishing gravity (FG). Drop the 1.0 and subtract the FG from the SG. Multiply the difference by .129. example SG 1.056 FG 1.012 56-12D

44*.129=5.676 ABV=5.7%

Answer 2: The little cap will only help slow evaporation of the liquid in the airlock. Just make sure the liquid as at the appropriate level.

Welcome to the craft. Good Luck, Cheers, Mike
