tea from Bangladesh

I was in NYC on Friday getting a visa for a trip, but between dropping off the application and picking up the stamped passport I had a few hours to kill, so (among other things) I went to browse at Kalustyan's at 28th or so & Lexington.

There, I found some of Ispahani's CTC tea grown in (I think) Bangladesh (near Mirzapore). Impressions from my first, late-night cup: the liquor is a dark amber, clear and bright. It's more fragrant (a bit citrus-y), and less full-bodied than most Assam CTCs I've had, reminiscent of Ceylon or some Kenyan CTC's I like. It is drinkable on its own, but could probably stand milk or lemon well. $13/lb. I haven't found it on the internet, but I haven't looked very hard.

Wah Wah I want some. You're going to make me add the km's to the odometer. I need to restock on achar anyway. I haven't made the Indian circuit in awhile.

Adding slightly to what Natarajan previously said, this Ispahani produced a fleeting sweetness as it first crossed my lips. Other than that, his description does it. Not at all unpleasant, and my first CTC in many a year. I drank a cup and intend to ice the rest. Goes *great* with Blind Willie Johnson.

Lonnie Johnson and Robert Johnson. I haven't advanced as yet to Jeffersons. In my case at least, "need" would be a very strong word. Lew, ya got a BLJ recording?

I thought most Indian teas were CTC at best. That's where their money is. I've heard it said that teas from Bangladesh are exported by the ton to India because they're cheaper and satisfy the Indian market. I can see the Assam style in this Ispahani. It's not bad at all. I wouldn't want to make a habit of it, though. It isn't that good.
