Upton's Organic Lu An Melon Seeds green tea (#ZG68D)

I'm happy to say I finally got a Chinese green tea from Upton Tea that I really enjoy. First, let me say that I haven't tried *all* of Upton's Chinese green teas, but all those I've ordered in the past, I didn't think were anything special. However the new batch of organic Lu An Gua Pian I think is better than any other China green I've gotten from Upton so far. The taste is slightly sweet, slightly brothy, quite smooth, with hints of earthy/nutty as well. It might remind you a bit of a good Lung Jing, in fact. The leaves are a nice deep green, and you'll get a generous number of infusions from them. Since I bought the spectacular Lung Jing from Gray & Seddon this past spring (remember that one, Michael?) and then the very disappointing Lung Jing from Fun Alliance, I haven't done any price comparisons on Lung Jing from other vendors, but I'd say this Lu An Melon Seed from Upton might even be a good substitute for a Lung Jing, if you don't want to shell out what most vendors ask for their better Lung Jing.

Sounds good.

Sure do. And it compares favorably with LJ's twice and three times the price, IMO.

...speaking of which, do you have the shell the melon seeds, or can you just steep them as is?

Ha. Very funny. Doesn't "gua pian" mean "melon slice" in Chinese? I thought I read that somewhere. To me, the leaves do resemble slices of melon more than they do melon seeds.

According to the dictionary I use, yes.

Curious how it got named "Melon Seed" when they gave the tea an English name. The leaves don't resemble seeds at all.
