Absinth

Anyone ever try Absinth? It is not available in the US but I was offered a bottle obtained from UK. Are the claims about this stuff (wormwood) true? I read everything from hallucinogenic to THC cousin. Hope one of our international posters can enlighten me. Scott

I drink some from time to time. It's not hallucinogenic, that's just a myth ;-) However, it's quite strong so if you're not careful when you drink it, you might see something wierd :-)

yes, I like the ones with lower vol (around 40-50%) and flavoured with anise -> I usualy avoid czech and german ones).

absinthe contains thujone which is hallucinogenic (but usualy the dosis in the absithe you can buy legally is much to low (< 30 mg/kg)).

Careful with the fire water!

I had some of this at one of my pal's houses about a month ago. I didn't care for it too much but it got mixed in between whiskies so it really didn't have a fair shot.

Maybe I'll try it again.

Well, what made it fun is we went to this bar and ordered it and they brought us the following: two big shots of absinthe, matches, little spoons, and sugar.

  1. put a little sugar on spoon.
  2. dip in absinthe.
  3. light sugar on spoon on fire (it lights very easily which should tell you something).
3.wait a few seconds for sugar on spoon to carmalize.
  1. dip into drink and stir.
  2. Drink.
  3. Go to #1 and start again.

At end of evening we were pretty drunk. It was a good time but I repeat: be careful with the fire water!

Personally, I prefer Scotch but that was a fun evening...

I haven't ever tried to drink this stuff myself but know that up till last year this drink was illegal in the Netherlands. The reason for this was that 'in the old days' absinthe was said to cause / strengthen psychosis due to some of its contents. The most famous story probably is that under the influence of absinthe Vincent van Gogh cut off his ear.

An interesting article on the effects of this drink is at

Yes but here in The Netherlands where it is widely available we know that it does not have hallucinogenic qualities. I was in New York last fall and a NY friend asked me to bring a bottle. He was dying to get stoned on Absinthe. But he was very disspointed when all he got was old fashioned drunk. It does no more than that. The wormwood does not get you stoned, nor does it have any qualities like halucinogenic mushrooms or LSD. At least the wideley available stuff we get in Holland and Germany and even the French stuff I have tried does not do this for you. There are a lot of myth's surrounding this stuff.

Peace,

Jock

Absinthe has strange after effects; you might hear sounds like a motor cycle the next day. This is because "Absinthe makes the fart go Honda"

If you have a head cold, I understand any spirit can be mildly hallucinogenic.

Just take a bottle of your favourite spirit to bed, together with two candles.

Light the candles.

Drink the spirit until you see three candles.

Extinguish the middle candle, and sleep soundly for the rest of the night.
