Binny's update

They have a good ! selection at the Grand street store. I had a hard time deciding, but walked out of the store after purchasing a Bruichladdich (NAS) 3D The Peat Proposal and a 16 year old Binny's Cask & Thistle bottling of Mortlach. I am dramming the Laddie now and to say the least it is unusual. The can is orange ( copper) colored and says 3 peat levels , 3 origins, 3eras. Uniquely bottled using Islay spring water. There is no medicinalal flavor (Isladine) and for my inexperienced palate I find it a difficult comparison to other expersions of Laddie or even other distilleries. The peat is pronounced but with no phenol like Laphroig or Lagavulin. Like other Laddies its Smooth and very enjoyable. That's my description. I hope someone else has tried this and can explain what an occasional bottling is. Is this a prototype that was sent out for evaluation or maybe disposal? I'm sure someone in this group can give much more detail on this dram . I give it an 83

Well I guess we now know where the Octomore is going..

not meant as a slam.. The Distiller has to market product to bring cash in the door while they wait for their product to mature to a marketable age. There have been some really nice expressions that have come out like this. It is just that I would very much like there to be Octomore left in nine years so I can try it as a mature twelve year old.

An Occasional bottling is typically something that will not be repeated, or likely only repeated if the right circumstances arise again... Say for example: the distillery were to turn up a half dozen Older casks where the angles had taken the ABV down to or maybe just bellow the 40% mark. It would be quite smooth and rounded but maybe not legally whisky, they could vat it with some three year old, still harsh and just barely old enough to be called whisky. Then they could bulk it up with other (say 8+ y/o) whisky to produce a larger production lot and sell it as a NAS occasional bottleing.
