Canadian (off-Topic)

I was in my local Oregon State Controlled (Don't get me started) store and saw Seagram's VO 8yo on sale for $18. That's with tax. I've always been biased against Canadian (The whisky, not the people, I adore) because I've thought they lack bite and character. But I'm a sucker for a sale and a pretty bottle so I bought it.

Really nice. Nothing like a Scotch whisky but very smooth and with a nice taste that I can only describe as "oily" and "floral."

Do others have any thoughts and advice about Canadian whisky? Keep in mind that if you're going to suggest some bottling that runs $40+ I'm going to run out and get me a decent Islay. So what's at the lower, yet drinkable, end of the spectrum?

I just tried Pendleton, which is Canadian whisky from a distillery in Oregon (or something like that) and was struck by how smooth it was, although perhaps a little light on character. Runs about $20.

Alberta Springs is worth a try in that it is still made from rye (here in Canada, what is called Canadian whisky in the USA is called rye whisky, although these days most of it is made from other grains). There is also a new Canadian Club with a sherry finish, which I hear is very nice.

Alberta Premium -- dirt-cheap, 100 per cent rye and surprisingly tasty

Schenley OFC 8YO -- another bargain

Any of the Canadian Club expressions. The sherry is nice. Like the A'Bunadh, it has a very heavy sherry presence, but it doesn't feel overbalanced. But even the middle of the road ordinary CC is a good competent drink.

Wiser's 18YO

Forty Creek Barrel Select, Forty Creek Three Grain -- Smooth and very, very pleasant.

Centennial -- ditto.

And some boutiquey selections that sell for around $40 Cdn here and are all worth it:

Century Reserve 21YO Gibson's Finest 18YO Lot No. 40 Gooderham & Worts

Finally, if you're in the U.S. and you happen to find, on a dusty shelf in a poorly lighted store, a few bottles of Bush Pilot's Private Reserve, snap them up and send me one as a tip fee.

cheers.

I'll second that. Both very nice, and selling in Ontario for less than $25 Cdn.

I'll also suggest the Gibson's 18. I'm not a fan of Rye, but my friend really likes it. Runs about $35 Cdn.

Doug.
