Caol Ila 1990 Demerara Rum Finish

We were browsing in Gordon and Macphail in Elgin this afternoon, and came away with a bottle of the above. We'll be opening it on New Year's Eve and were wondering what to expect. Anyone tried it?

nope but let me know what it is like.. It is available here but I have had spotty luck with the exotic "finished" scotches, so I have been dithering.

Tried it, but haven't found a rum-finished whisky I like yet. There's usually a sweet note that I find off-putting. It will be interesting to hear your comments.

Have had the Chieftains Choice Caol Ila Rum finish. I kept on buying new bottles of it. Not only myself, but many associates loved it. I dont like oversherried Islay's because for my pallate at least the sherry does nothing much for it. I think they should use loads of sherry on Lowlands and on some Speysides. By saying "I think" I mean according to my taste. But getting back to your question. The rum finish does add to the Islay whisky. The maritime flavours of rum, add to it a bit. Does take away a bit of the salt and does round the malt off a bit. But certainly not in an unpleasant way.

Peace,

Jock The Step-We-Ceilidh Band.

Interesting, I've been pretty fond of the rum casked malts I've tried. I'm a big fan of the older Springbanks, but the only recently produced Springbank I really love is the Rum Wood Expression 13yo(?). Also one of my favorate Irish malts is the Bushmill's Rum cask.

All a matter of taste of course. John

OK, here's my summary. We both enjoyed it very much. Very smooth, smoky, peaty, seaweed and TCP. And very sweet. Perhaps slightly too sweet for my taste, but that won't stop me enjoying the rest of the bottle!
