Closest Taste to Oban?

Hmmm. It's been a while since I last had any Oban, but seeing that it's a seaside distillery I'd be inclined to give Old Pulteney a try.

We're so frustrated at the difficulty in finding our favorite scotch, Oban. Can anyone recommend scotches with the closest taste?

Oban has some peat smoke that the current Pultney (not the older expressions) totally lacks. I don't think they taste anything the same. Had some Oban this past Saturday and it had been a while.

I remembered having a discussion with a bartender (off duty) one time who claimed that Oban was much more smokey than what I happened to be drinking, which was Talisker, so this time I switched and (just as I remembered), the Talisker was indeed heavier.

If you like the Oban hint of saltiness, but don't want the extra peat of Talisker, you might try Clynelish.

Uzytkownik napisal:

Clynelish 14yo is the first that comes to mind. Old Pulteney 12yo will not be that far away, either. Or Inchgower 14yo. You might also want to have a go at Highland Park 12yo. Or the older version of Isle of Jura, the 16yo. They are all different - to at least some extent - from your favourite Oban, but there's a chance you will find some of Oban's characteristics in each of them. See for yourself which suits you best.

I think Diageo may have brought out the Clynelish 14yo to fill in for the occasional shortage of Oban. The Clynelish 14yo was the first official bottleing of Clynelish available in the USA (except for some Rare Malts editions some years ago). Its character is similar to Oban, and unlike almost any independent bottling of Clynelish I've tasted. I remember thinking to myself they had done a good job of providing a Clynelish substitiute; a better job than they did in finding substitiutes for Lagavulin, then in short supply. The Caol Ila 18 just didn't have the heft and depth of Lagavulin 16yo, while the Caol Ila 12yo seemed aimed more at the Laphroaig 10 and Ardbeg 10 drinkers. (Lagavulin seems much easier to find now, but the price remains quite high.)
