Distiller's Editions

Last year on a trip out of province I picked up a Lagavulin Distillers Edition. It is good, but on balance I think I prefer regular Lagavulin. Now we have available locally all of the Distillers Editions of the 6 "Classic Malts". All are somewhat pricey so are a bit of a gamble to try on a whim. I'm wondering what, if any, are worth buying.

One of my favorite whiskys is Talisker, so the D.E. version of that is tempting. The other one I'm considering is Oban D.E., since regular Oban is still unavailable here and I'd like to have an Oban in my collection.

Any reviews or opinions on these?

I've tried most of the "Distillers Editions" of the so-called Classic Malts.

In every case I've found the regular version to be better. The "Distillers Editions" aren't worth the extra expense in my experience.

Hi Greg,

I disagree with Dave, I don't believe the DEs are trying to be better, just a different take on old favourites -- some of these work IMO, some don't.

The ones that work for me are Lagavulin DE (not the latest bottlings but the earlier vintages, 1979-81), the Talisker DE and the Cragganmore DE. I have to say that the Cragganmore is a Speysider I don't particularly care for but I really like a good port finish and find the DE is well done and contributes much to the standard version; it becomes a very succulent dram with a nice peppery spiciness.

One DE I really don't like however is the Oban DE -- I find the qualities I like so much about Oban have disappeared and I am not impressed by the sherry that's left.

My two cents, Johanna
