Good SMS selections in southeastern usa?

Hi everyone--

I live in North Carolina, where the liquor stores are state-run, and have a poor selection of single malts.

Does anyone know the status of the surrounding states, and if there are any good shops? Anything in Atlanta, say? I know shipping is not possible given state regulations, but a road trip is not out of order...

Thanks for any input-

We have a reasonably good selection of malts here in Raleigh- Durham-Chapel Hill. I've looked in state-run stores in South Carolina and Virginia and not seen a better selection. We don't have any of the private bottlings, but we do have laphroig 10 and

15 and lagavulin 16, and caol ila 12 and 18, and ardbeg.

Where have you found Ardbeg in NC? It's not listed as approved by NC ABC. Search for it at:

and you'll find nothing (you will find the other whiskies you mentioned). If it's really around here, do tell.

Thanks both for replying--i had to have a friend send me some ardbeg from the midwest, and i think i picked up a laphroaig 15 in savannah. i was hoping to find some bowmores other than the 12, virtually any kind of distiller's version, and just plain a deeper variety of the big brands.

I think this area is starting to rob people on Macallans, though. I could buy the 18 for $95 last year, but now it's $150??? What the...

On route 55 south of RTP. I special ordered a case months ago, and the store manager got a second case on spec. There's still a bottle or two left (unless I grab it so I won't have to order another case).
