AFAIK the SWA defines:

- single malt scotch whisky A Scotch whisky distilled at a single distillery from water and malted barley without the addition of any other cereals and by batch distillation in pot stills

- blended malt scotch whisky (old term was "vatted malt", sometimes "pure malt") A blend of single malt Scotch whiskies that have been distilled at more than one distillery. (e.g. "Ardbeg Serendipity")

- single grain scotch whisky A Scotch whisky distilled at a single distillery from water and malted barley with or without whole grains of other malted or unmalted cereals that does not comply with the definition of single malt Scotch whisky. (e.g. "Black Barrel")

- blended grain scotch whisky A blend of single grain Scotch whiskies that have been distilled at more than one distillery (e.g. "Compass Box Hedonism")

- single blend scotch whisky A blend of single grain and single malt Scotch whiskie from the same distillery (AFAIK currently only Loch Lomond can & does produce such a thing: "Loch Lomond Single Blend")

- blended scotch whisky A blend of one or more single malt Scotch whiskies with one or more single grain Scotch whiskies (e.g. "Johnny Walker Red")

No wonder Jo Public doesn't stand a chance. I think this shows the problem of different organisations making their own definitions! They need to work together to produce common definitions.

" Grain whisky Whisk(e)y distilled from wheat or maize in a continuous still. " No mention of barley!

Therefore the fact that I mentioned barley. is not a contradiction, just an addition. I was informed that barley was useable many years ago, when I first encountered the writing of Michael Jackson. I would have thought any grain suitable for grain whisk(e)y. Scotch grain whisky is distilled differently from malt whisky
