Lagavulin shortage, but...

Hello all,

So I've been following these recent posts regarding the shortage of Lagavulin, my own personal favourite, all the while watching my last bottle empty slowly away.

I've looked around near where I live (Maryland, DC area) to no avail, so this weekend while visiting my parents' place (PA) I stopped by some stores up there. After two strikes, I found a liquor store with four (4!) bottles on the shelf.

Well, now they have but two, and I am happy, but curious, because the manager said that he was unaware of any shortage. He said about six months ago they had difficulty getting it, but at this point they had a case sitting in a warehouse nearby, and more could be ordered, it seemed.

So is this stuff really in short supply? If so, I should send my father back to pick up the entire case, right?

Best regards, Justin

ps. $46 a bottle.

If you have the means, why not do this anyway ... shortage or no? ;-) And, yes. It is in short supply.

Upon visiting the distillery two weeks ago, we were told by the guide that there would still be supplies, but they would be limited. What the limitation means, geographically, is another question, probably decided upon by the marketing department. We were told that Scandinavia would have it back in a small batch in august.

As Ivar has pointed out, there is a shortage in that they do not currently have enough stocks of Lagavulin 16 Year Old to meet the worldwide demand for this product. They have introduced the 12 Year Old as a stop gap measure in certain markets. Ultimately, the marketing people will look at sales of Lagavulin 16 in various markets and decide which they will continue to supply on a regular basis with the 16 OB and which will have to do with sporadic supplies of 16 OB and the 12 OB as an interim measure.

That said, it is anyone's guess as to which countries will have their supply lines capped so if you really can't live without it you should probably have your father pick up some more bottles.

I have also been reading this thread once and then. Since Lagavulin was available in almost all shops in Sweden, my theory was that the shortage in other parts of the world might be due to a major order from the Swedish "Systembolaget". The good thing with a system of monopoly run by the goverment is that that company is the biggest single buyer in Europe. However, now I see that the numer of shops with Lagavulin has decreased over the last month and now it can almost only be found in smaller towns. So maybe I should go and order a bottle. If there is a shortage, I would not be surprised if Lagavulin or the retailers increases there prices.

Best regards Jan

It came back in stock last month, 4 cases worth. The price did go up, $59,99, and the threat is that it will become even more scarce.

Just through the big new Amsterdam Duty-Free yeasterday, and nary a bottle of Lagavulin to be seen at any price. This is two trips in a row with this shortage at AMS, and I'm getting anxious to see some of this particular malt back in stock.

Just saw it here in Minneapolis for $38, in a store that was out until recently.
