Laphroaig 10 price going up?

Wanting to get a special gift for a friend's birthday I was disappointed to find that our local liquor store (Berkeley, California) was out of Laphroaig

  1. Never fear, I could still splurge for my friend's gift because the 10 was now 58 dollars, instead of the 32 dollars it was a couple of weeks ago. Ouch.

Does anyone know what's going on? Has a sea monster engulfed the island of Islay and created havoc with the price?

I haven't noticed price gouging like that, but the "regular" bottles of SM (which is about all I can find in my Gawd-awful part of the world) have all gone up 15% or more in the past couple of months.

Hi Mike. Yes, well, I do feel gouged, but I had few options, and this was Bruce Fraser's favorite as you may know. (Bruce is an author who is well-known and respected in some circles) Barring some act of nature driving up the price, I think I've paid my last visit to that particular store for the time being!

Your part of the world looks fine to me. A bit flat, so good for bicycling, and is otherwise very centrally located for reaching any other part of North America.

Try Trader Joe's where Laphroaig 10 yo is $29.99.

Small world! Hi Mike. Yes, Bruce Fraser was well known to those of us in the digital imaging world. I just never connected him with single malts until one of the podcasts (I think) mentioned that Laphroig 15 yr. was his favorite. Not a bad choice. I have a bottle of the 10 yr. open, but my 15 yr. remains temporarily factory sealed.

I'd love to have your problems. I've never been able to get Laphroaig

15, or quarter cask, or cask strength, in my province. I'm surprised to hear it's costing so much where you are tho. In Vancouver (BC) Laphroaig 10 costs $55.99 CAD (about 47.24 USD) after tax -- and that's alot of tax! I've seen the price fluxuate before quite a bit. Infact it used to be more like $65 CAD. I've always assumed the price shifts are due to currency value changes.

I found the 15 yr. on a recent trip to the Kansas City area (still no mecca for malt). I've never seen a Laphroig cask, Islay cask or any other less common bottling. The pickings are mighty slim in the middle of the U.S. Perhaps it's the abundance of bourbon from the east that accounts for limited shelf space.
