Macallan 21yr

Just received a bottle of Macallan "Fine Oak" 21yr as a gift from a client. Ignoring the expense factor, I found this bottle to be a little on the weak or light side. Wine casked single malts are not my first choice, but I expected more. Sure it is very smooth, but I enjoy a Highland Park or Ardbeg much more than this at quite a difference in price. Anyone tried this bottle?

Nice client.

Not that, but I found the Macallan 18 to be smooth, flavorful, complex, and altogether yummy. You have to wonder why they finished it in a wine cask - was it not up to standard on its own, that they had to try something?

How _do_ they decide which barrels get transfered into different wood for a year or so of finishing?

I thought the "Fine Oak" range was matured strictly in ex-bourbon barrels.

I've tried one bottle. It was OK, but not great. Agree that it is on the weak side. I probably won't purchase it again, but it's a nice gift.

1985 Macallan 18 is a great bottle. I find the 1986 and 1987 that is currently on the shelves to be a distinct step down in flavor, which is a crying shame.

Recently bought a bottle of the 1861 replica - a very nice bottle of scotch.
