mixed fortunes at waitrose

A year ago we visited Monmouth and I went in my 1st ever Waitrose store. I was pleasantly surprised to find they did a single grain (8yr) and a 1981 port finished highland single - both reasonably priced and tasty.

This year I went back - devastated - no single grain and all the 23yr sold out (had been on offer). So I asked an assistant and he found me 2 bottles of the 1981 in the store - at offer price. However, he said that they don't sell the grain any more.

So two questions:

  1. has anybody here tried the 1981 - what did you think of it and what distillery do you think it comes from?

  1. does anybody know a Waitrose store where they still sell the grain - or a reasonably priced alternative in any store?

As an aside, also on my holiday last week I popped into the whisky shop in Gloucester and picked up the flora & fauna Bladnoch. Not opened it just yet - anyone know what I can expect from it?

No! There are very few single grains sold - CameronBrig is the only one I know, produced at Diageo's Leven set up. You can sometimes get it at Diageo Visitor Centres, - is there a Gordon's Gin Visitor Centre somewhere in London I wonder?

It's one of the better F & F offerings IMHO. Expect quite a lot of sherry, and some sort of fruity and lemony to both nose and the taste. One of those whiskies that slides slowly down the gullet and warms the cockles... what the expert tasters describe as "big"

Enjoy

I'll check out my local Waitrose next time I go, if I can remember
