Off Topic - brandy

Doesnt seem to be a brandy newsgroup so i thought I'd try my luck with you guys. What brandies do you like? I just got into brandy recently, first with a bottle of el cheapo Three Barrels, which tastes a bit synthetic, like they added a smoothing agent to it or something. Now I am drinking a Martel VSOP which seems to have more delicate flavour and doesnt have that fake smoothness.

How do Almagnacs compare to Cognacs?

Assuming you mean Armagnac: earthier, less sweet. Under most circumstances, a superior drink to many, including me.

Salignac is also worth sampling and comparing.

That said, visiting Cognac and sampling a hundred or so varieties not available in the US made me realize how limited our choices are over here (sort of like having nothing but Glenlivet available, as good as it is). If I lived in Cognac, my opinion above might be different.

There's a world to be explored there as big as single malts, I think. I don't have nearly enough experience with it to give advice, except to add Calvados to the list. It's to apples what cognac is to grapes, and goes down very nicely after a good dinner.

Agreed. In our house, with over 100 single malts at hand, Calvados is still the after-dinner drink of choice. It soothes an over-full stomach like nothing else.

Speaking of which, we brought home a very nice looking bottle of Groult Venerable Calvados from Binny's in Chicago last week. Since today is my 60th birthday, I expect it to be opened and sampled tonight!

We also acquired a bottle of Eleuthra "Orangerie." Bit of a strange flavor combination there, orange and Scotch. Not unpleasant, but certainly takes some getting used to. Not all that far from Pyrat rum, actually, with a bit less sweetness. Has anyone else tried it?
