Peat Monster

I've just been given a bottle of the above for Christmas. It almost sounds like a novelty but I see that it has won awards. Looking forward to trying this one.

Today is given over to 14-yo Oban though as this is the malt that packs this year's Christmas Pud!

I "accidentally" bought a bottle of The Peat Monster. I was on my way home from something and decided to pick up something new to try. The guy at the liquor store suggested it. When he said "why dont you try the peat monster" I thought he meant that was it's nickname, and he didn't answer me when i asked if it was an Islay. I didn't realized that i'd bought a vatted malt until i got home and opened it up. I wasn't totally disappointed, but it certainly lacks the character of a single. I ended up bringing it to the newyears party and pouring it for everybody. Everyone enjoyed it, so some good came of it.

It's not outstanding, but it *is* very smooth and lacks the iodine overtone of some of the Islays.

Certainly worth trying.

I'm a big fan of the Islaydine that characterizes Laphroaig, and to a lesser extent, Ardbeg, Caol Ila and others. My palate and I think they are the greatest of all the single malts.

But I like the Peat Monster. Evenings when I feel like a bit of peat but I don't want a malt that grabs me by the throat and slaps me around a bit, the Peat Monster fits the bill. It doesn't make my top five, but among relatively affordable malts, it's currently in my top 15.
