Peatiest non-Islay malt?

What is the peatiest malt which doesn't have any of the brine or iodine character of an Islay malt? I usually like Islay malts, but sometimes I crave the peat flavour while not craving these uniquely Islay characteristics.

Try a Longrow from the Springbank distillery. Or, of course, Talisker.

How about Ardmore? I don't know if it's the peatiest, but it is smokey-smooth!

Talisker 10 YO, a bit of brine but overridden by the smoke.

Isle of Jura Superstition has good peat and smoke without the Islaydine. Quite a nice dram.

Try the Connemara Irish Whiskey from Cooley Distillery

Don't know if it's the peatiest, but Glenfiddich Caoran Reserve is quite pleasant, IMO.

I'll add a vote for that as well. 'Quite pleasant' sums it up rather well.

The question was which is the peatiest malt. After all Lediag is not the worst IMHO.

Actually, I had a dram of that in Glasgow, comparing to Old Pulteney and Ardbeg 10, and found that it was pretty good..., IMHO! Anders

Uzytkownik "Steve Loft" napisal:

Talking of which, Balvenie 17yo IslayCask comes to mind. A splendid malt. But then, just like the Glenfiddich CR, it is a Speysider finished in Islay casks.

Hi Bill,

Give "Brora" a try - if you can get one.

It's a peaty highland malt from far north of the highlands. But the destillery is closed since the late 80's - so it is hard to find any and the prices now are climbing (still not so expensive as, say "Port Ellen").

And: If you dont like the Islay-iodine: Ever tried "Bruichladdich"? OK - still an Islay, but especially the "3D" and " 3D 2nd-Edition" are real peaty ones - but without the iodine (IMHO).

I never said I didn't like it, just that sometimes I don't crave it.

I think some non-Islays get a nice light, almost sweet vegetal autumn-leafiness from peat (like Clynelish), but a really non-iodine non-fishy non-Islay with a stiff peat backbone is the Benriach heavily peated--the peat flavor is almost all deep hard smoke. Ardmore can be wonderfully peaty too, but mine have been as "interesting" flavor-wise as the bossest of Islays.
