Recommend a good blend?

Okay, so I'm relatively poor, and though I have a few of my favourites around the house (Lagavulin, Laphroig, Ardberg, Oban, Talisker) I can't go through them at the rate at which I'd like a drink now and then.

So can anyone recommend a good, reasonably priced blend that might appeal to someone who has the above as favourites? I'm essentially looking for something with some bite.

Many thanks in advance, Justin

Teachers Highland Cream isn't too bad for an inexpensive blend.

Usually after a single malt or two, I switch off.

J.W. Black would be my first choice followed by J.W. Red or The Famous Grouse.

Next and last, Dewars.

Then beer or bed time.

Yeah, me too.

I picked up a bottle of JW Red - it's pretty good stuff. Not bad.

I steadfastly refuse to touch the Famous Grouse after visiting the Glenturret Distillery a few months ago and being "treated" to the makeover launched upon it by the "Famous Grouse Experience", which is an embarassment to whisky and should serve as a warning to distilleries everywhere about what not to do.

Can you elaborate, please? Before I developed a taste for single malts I used to rate Famous Grouse quite highly. I haven't had it for a few years now. Has it changed?

Oh, it's nothing to do with the whisky itself, I had never had it until the tasting *at* the distillery, but I digress.

The "tour" consisted of some ditzy young thing who didn't know the first thing about whisky speeding us around the distillery, which didn't look particularly active. The tour itself was jammed into about 20 minutes, and was followed by another half hour of watching a stupid video about the Famous Grouse advertising "phenomenon" and participating in a multimedia-room experience which had a fly-over of Scotland as well as other non-whisky-related boredom.

It was absolutely mindless, pure advertising.

All this for 8 pounds? No thank you. I would not have enjoyed it even for free.

To me, who's a great fan Johnnie RD, BL, et al, that sounds reckless and dumb. IMO, it IS a blend that you can find many a fragrant aroma, not just a tool for binging/careless drinking.

The way you describe it, it's as if your having a cheap, sub-standard blend that retails for the same price as a cheap vodka. And, in all fairness, it seems to me you could just as well drink that.

But, to each his own.

Well, excuse the shit out of me for dissing your favorite label. I guess you missed the part where I said I LIKED the stuff.

And where did the "binging/careless drinking" come from? Having *a* scotch on the rocks is not the same as swilling rotgut vodka until you fall over. (*a* means one single drink, for the less literate out there)

Once more for the folks up in the cheap seats. Sometimes you want a drink to sip & savor. Sometimes you just want a drink. Not bowing down and genuflecting to the god Uisge Beatha for each offering of scotch does not mean you're not appreciative of the brand, but there is a HUGE difference between the respect given to a $80 bottle of Single Malt, and a $18 bottle of Johnny Walker Red.

Sounds like flaming a previous post without bothering to really read it qualifies as "reckless & dumb". Then again, maybe it's the whisky talking.

El Capitan (who, incidentally, abhors vodka. Paint thinner would be more palatable)

We'll miss ya, pal. Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.

I started out the thread in a most civil manner. However, being called a drunk and 'reckless and dumb' rubbed me the wrong way. Excuse me AGAIN for not saying "Please sir, may I have another.."

you must be an awfully delicate person if that exchange horrified you to the point of unsubscribing. how on earth do you get through life? how on earth can you stomach whisky?

by the way, how is what you wrote above any better than the posts you complain about? you called them "idiot schoolchildren". how's that not a flame itself? how is that different, francine?

Personally, I like the Dewars when I am at a bar that only carries blends, or has overpriced their qne or two single malts. Here in the Washington DC area the only nearby place I know of that carries a good stock of single malts is The Royal Mile over in Silver Spring/Rockville.

Cheers, Bill
