Recommendations?

Hi everyone, I am a bit new to this newsgroup.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good single malt; so far, I have tried Glenfiddich 15, Dalwhinnie 15, and Aberlour A'bundah. I liked the Glenfiddich very much, and the Aberlour, but found the Dalwhinnie a bit too sharp for my taste.

Suggestions welcome, recommendations welcome. I am hoping not to spend more than $70 on a bottle, but if there is some single malt that is really worth it I can go a bit higher.

Thanks!

So you like smooth Highland-Whiskys. If you like the sherry of A'bundah, why not try a Glendronach or a Linkwood? Glengoyne and first of all Glenmorangie (not the wood finish range) should fit your taste as well.

I am uncertain what you mean by "sharp." I consider the OB Dalwhinnie bottlings to be a bit muted and subtle in character, rather than bold or assertive. So that makes a recommendation difficult.

Nevertheless, in the non-sherry finished area, I would recommend trying the OB

12-year Cragganmore. Out of 100+ available bottles, this is probably our favorite everyday SM.

Macallan 12 is probably a scotch you'd like a lot.

Right now I think the 16 YO Aberlour at US$49 is the best value out there.

The A'bunadh is a sherry monster, though, not merely a sherried malt. I am having difficulty thinking of it in the same category as Glenfiddich and Dalwhinnie. The only thing I can think is that Mr. B. might be using a lot of water to bring the A'bunadh down to where it is less sharp than the Dalwhinnie.

I'd recommend that at some point he try one of the island malts, but only when he wants to challenge his palate. I'd recommend either Talisker or Lagavulin to start on the island style. They are strong, assertive malts, but the island nature of them -- the peat, the smoke -- is very well balanced.

Mr B Thank you.

I keep reading about Dalwhinnie being smooth - I found it tasted like battery acid...YIK.

I thought I was going mad. Individual taste is an odd thing isnt it
