So here I am in Cape Breton, they have single malt local!

I'm in Glace Bay on Business. Nasty blizzard, so I pulled over (to the liquor store) to wait it out. It seems that Cape Breton produces single Malt, in fact, the only one in Canada. So I bought a bottle. But I can not open it until I get home with some friends. It's called Cape Breton Rare. Anyone ever try it? What do you think?

Here in Ontario it retails for about $94.00! I own 2 casks that are now about 13 years old.

Well I make it a habit to buy single malt from every place I visit......as long as they make single malt. So that leaves 2 places!

Post a review when you open it. I have a bottle of their first release from a few years back and I was not impressed. Visually it looked like engine oil and the flavour was like a single malt only very, very far away. For the price I could have gotten two excellant bottles of small batch Bourbon. I expect things have improved since then. You have to start somewhere.

I tried the previous two years, and wasn't too impressed, espescially at $90+ CDN ! It reminded me of Bushmills Malt, only, less. Sorry I can't be more specific than that. It's been awhile, and I didn't make any notes.

The 2003 version might be more interesting to some. It has some sherry like sweetness, and a bit more copper in the colour. Does anyone know if they put down some sherry casks? I assumed it was all plain oak, or American Bourban casks.

At $65 CDN I'd be slightly more inclined to keep some at hand, being a patriotic Canadian. But only slightly. In the $45 CDN range I would keep a bottle in the house.

Doug.

The plot thickens. I packed it up in my bag because I was flying out this morning. Somewhere between Sydney/Halifax/Ottawa/New York my bag got lost. Since we are undergoing a major blizzard, and my flight was the last thing that landed in New York (and probably will be for a couple of days) it may be a few days before the tasting takes place. Either that or there is a very happy customs agent somewhere :-). I'll keep you posted.
