Stores in NYC

Hi,

I'll be visiting New York City in a few weeks. Does anyone have suggestions on stores with good selections of malts for reasonable prices?

I was there last September and needed to buy some single malts for a bunch of writers I was holding a nosing and tasting night for. Anyway, I was amazed at this store in Manhattan

Its not exactly cheap, but my goodness it does have a full range in stock. Nice helpful staff too. But I doubt if they would be that much dearer than elsewhere in NYC. If you take the subway to Brooklyn Hights and get off and walk towards Atlantic Avenue, there is a decent store there too. I forget the name of it, but I remember it had a decent amount of single malt whisky in stock. Maybe slightly cheaper than the Park Avenue crowd, but not half as nice. And if you are stayng in Manhattan, then its probably not worth the trip just to go to the liquor store in Brooklyn. But ( going off topic here) it is worth it for the view of Manhattan from the promenade. The Brownstone buildings are nice there too. Hope this helps. I love New York. I live in The Netherlands. Do have a great time and I hope you find a decent place for buying whisky. If you are flying in from Europe then of course the duty free at JFK or Newark or La Guardia wont have a decent selection, but probably will be cheaper.

Peace,

Jock

Park Avenue Liquors has an amazing selection. If you're mainly concerned about price, check out Warehouse Liquors on Astor Place (below 8th St) and Broadway. They consistantly have the best prices I've seen, and the selection is not bad. Nearby is Astor Spirits (Astor Place and Lafayette), which has a better selection, although the prices are slightly higher. There are small neighborhood liquor stores all over the place, but the selections tend to be spotty and the prices tend to be consistantly high. But you can occasionally find good deals.

DBA, a bar on 1st Ave and 2nd Street, has a great selection of whisky by the glass.

Try to remember if you can, as I work on Atlantic avenue, and haven't noticed any stores with single malts. Close to the promenade, or off deeper into bkln'?

Decent place near the Gowanus I check into, but nothing too rare...

Aaron is correct:

Dream Selection/Typical Pricing = Park Ave Good Selection/Good Pricing = Aston Spirits Dream Pricing/Decent Selection = Warehouse

And, actually, each store will have some cheaper than the others, some more expensive. So...

If you like research, it might be worth deciding ahead of time what you want, and calling around to these three with your laundry list for pricing and availability. Then, whichever store you go to first, you'll end up buying way too many bottles for your suitcase and won't even need to visit the others. That's been my experience, anyway. (Did I hear "Krug NV for $100?!" Toss one of those in the cart, too...)

You can also search the databases online, at least for Park Ave and Astor Wines and Spirits. The Park Ave is easier to browse, whereas Astor just has a search engine...their inventory is not printed otherwise. The URL for Park Ave is posted above.

Hi Matt. I was taken by someone to have a look at Manhattan from the promenade. We stopped at the first or second subway station. Then walked to the promenade to see the skyline. Then we walked back an we went to a kind of Irish bar just off the start of Atlantic Avenue. It had art on the walls and the people told me they change the exhibition every month or so. Then walking to the subway station, we passed a yuppie kind of bar with a big open window at front. Close to the nearest subway station going back to Manhattan. And then there were some deli's and a big liquor store. It had many wines and because I had brought a bottle of Balvenie double wood over for a friend in the Upper West Side I went into that liquor store out of curiosity to see what they charged for the same bottle. And that was the store. I know all this is pretty vague, but I hope it helps you. If you like I can e-mail the friend that took me and ask her where it was. Oh one last thing. There was a radio shack kind of store next to it. I went in there to buy a card reader for my digital camera card. It was not radio shack, but something like it and it was small.

Peace,

Jock

Many thanks Jock!

It helps a lot, seeing I'm somewhat familiar with the area.
