Supermarket 'own brand' single malts...

I've been searching a long time for a really good value single malt of the style I like; Medicinal & peat.

I didn't think I'd find it in a supermarket 'own brand' but I have. If you live in the UK you *must* try Morrisons Islay single malt 10.

It is seriously good. I'd swear it was Laphroaig, like the 10 but with all the rough edges removed. Richer like the 15.

The best bit is its on offer at the moment for £12.95 for 70cl.

Unbelievable value.

Well, if it is called 'Morrisons' and is from Islay, I'd guess it was a Bowmore. Or is Morrisons the name of a supermarket there? Wow, £12.95 is a steal for any decent single malt!

My understanding of the supermarket own brand is that they are the 'real thing', bought in bulk at a discount, then sold at a lower price. Not great marketing for the producer who's trying to present the product as something 'upscale' and worth the extra money.

Yeah Morrisons is a supermarket. I loathe supermarkets but I'll step inside for one of these babies :)

The added value of the name Laphroaig is near 70% markup for the standard

10 and I think I prefer this 'un! Though I'd have to do a head-to-head to be sure.

Haven't tried it personally but a friend rates it highly. I think he thought it was Caol Ila..

Seems I'm going to be spending more time in supermarkets than I'd like in the future ;)

Morrisons also do a Highland and Spey own brand. The Highland has won many awards apparently but I haven't tried it myself.

Ah. I'm sure Doug was referring to something sold as McClelland's Islay in some places. It's a young Bowmore, unmistakably, and the parent company of Bowmore and other distilleries is Bowmore-Morrison.

I think it's more of a mark-down for young Islays bottled under another name. There are some wonderfully spirited young Lagavulins around, notably Dun Bheagan and The Ileach, which I find in Canada from time to time, and I think others are available only in Europe.

Across the pond here, Finlaggan, available at Trader Joe's is thought to be a young Laga. Spirited is a great way to put it! For only $17 a bottle, there is always one open and I find it a great way to keep costs down...heh. I'll probably be stocking up on about 1/2 doz bottles or so right before i move out of state.

Enjoy
