Wallstreet Journal Scotch Article

In the event you missed it, this past Saturday, December 10, the Wallstreet Journal published a very interesting full article on scotch whiskey. In the article, they point to the growing demand and scarcity of the aged product and how distilleries are working around the shortage.

With proper advertising and positioning I think we can expect to see more single malt with no posted age behind the unstated slogan................ it's not the age that matters. It's only a matter of time before some distillery states that their no age scotch was blended by computer to surpass the taste and smoothness of the best 12, 15 or 21 year old dram.

The article also points out that the wood finishes are mostly marketing ploys bordering on a hoax designed to deflect our attention from the real issues at hand - namely vintage shortage and old image in a new world. Although not mentioned in this article, the Cardhu snafu was probably a leading indicator.
