Whisky fakes

Has anyone bought a fake whisky yet? I think I have, although I'm not sure. I have a bottle of George and J.G. Smith's Glenlivet distilled in

1937 and bottled at cask strength. I'm having some experts look at it, but many people I've talked to think it's a fake.

A couple of questions.

  1. How will they (who is "they") determine it's fake?
  2. If it's fake, I'm sure that people would appreciate a warning about whoever sold you bogus merchandise.

Thanks, Dave Hinz

I read a while ago articles about fake or at least highly suspicious bottles being advertised on ebay.

Fake Laphroaig and Arran.

They will look at the label and see if it looks genuine. They will also look at the tax stamp and the markings on the bottle itself. I have had Gordon and MacPhail look at pictures of it, the printer who has worked there for 30 yrs included.

The next person I'm having look at it is a whisky valuer - they will see the actual bottle.

If they say it's a fake, I'd be glad to publish who sold it to me, but I won't do that until I'm sure.
