I was at a dinner this weekend and one attendee brought a bottle of 1983 Dr . Dahlem Erben Rheinhessen Oppenheimer Herrenberg Riesling Eiswein to share after dinner. SOmewhat unique as I had never had icewine that was this ol d before. The wine was quite dark amber in glass and intially smelled terr ible....sulpher, diesel and acrid nuts. Eventually aromas of honey, tart ci trus and toffee came through. Fairly light bodied on the palate the initia l sense was a tart acidity followed by sweetness then a finish of bright ac idity again. The wine was very mature with notes of cedar and hazelnuts, m adiera and toffee, orange marmalade and spices. I sipped it over an hour a nd it changed for the better than fell off quickly after an hour to an undr inkable flat mess. An interesting experience.
