Burgs, Bordeaux and Barolo

I had a brown bag lunch with a few friends yesterday and we each brought a bottle. Lunch was an antipasto and salumi platter, bread cheeses and cold sliced tenderloin.

2004 Leroy Vosne Romanee-Sadly a victim of poor storage as the wine was tot ally brown and bitter. Very little fruit and the nose was basically apple cider vinegar.

2003 DRC Richebourg-Brought by the same person and victim of the same stora ge issues. Why one would spend this kind of money on wine ans store in the furnace room (I thought it was supposed to be stored in my basement...duh) is beyond me. Not as bad as the Leroy but very brickish, nose of sour cher ries and little left on the palate but tea.

2000 Cos D'Estournal-Dark purple in the glass. Huge nose of blackberries an d cassis. Lovely texture and rich ripe berry flavors. "A-"

2005 Elio Altare Barolo Cerretta Vigna Bricco-Dark ruby red in the glass. E ffusive nose of spicy cherry and red fruis with a floral note. Lots of ripe fruits and spice on the palate with tar and anises on the finish. "A"

Wow, Bill, does this person actually like and drink wine, or do they just like collecting it? I recall Robert Parker once telling the story of visiting a collector who had this enormous cellar of wine (stored well, though). The guy opens for Parker a 20-year old Duboeuf Beaujolais-Villages that was totally shot. I don't quite get the mentality. Wine for me, and for more of us I'd wager, is all about sharing and conviviality. The biggest dilemma for me when I'm opening a wine at home for just myself is which one I can open and not miss, since the good ones I want to open with others to share.

Glad you had a few that were in good shape.

Typical story....more money than sense. He likes serving trophy wines but hasn't a clue. I see it often. The DRC was still in it's traditional stra w bundle wrapper and I was excited to try it but was so disappointed. It w as interesting because the fellow who brought the two Burgs thought they we re bad when he tasted them but declared that he was tired of buying expensi ve wines only to have them taste like sh*t. Hmmmmmmmmmm.
