Chateau Smith - anyone else think it is just wrong?

I have to admit a triple take this morning at Costco when I saw this for under $20. Smith? I said this cheap oh yeah it is not Ch. Smith Haut Lafitte it is Ch. Smith from Washington State made be Charles Smith how could I have taken it for any other? this isn't that far removed from labeling stuff as Chablis, might be better but the whole thing smells a little to me. see photos at

I think it's actually just their attempt at humor. Thier wines often have funny, wry labels always in black and white and bold fonts. They actually make pretty good wines for the price and their market niche focus on their motto which is something like..."It's just wine....drink it"

Thanks for the background. I like cute names as a rule (think Cigar Volant from Boony Doone as well as the Goats do Roam S. Africa wines) this one just seemed to touch a tad over the line.

Well give him a bit of a break because, after all, his name *is* really Charles Smith. His mother is probably proud.

Except that the eponymous Mr. Smith has nothing to do with the winery that bears his name, a property owned by Bronco Wine Co. (Fred Franzia).

As much as I would love that to be true, Bronco owns Charles Shaw and not as far as I can tell, Charles Smith.

I have met Mr Charles Smith (and his partner Charles Beiler in Charles and Charles WInes) and he does in fact own and operate a number of wine entities including Charles Smith Wines.

Oops! Right you are, Joseph. A brain cramp on my part, I'm afraid.
