Serious Wine Question

Hello All,

I have a serious wine question and don't want to come across as a troll. I'm not much of a wine drinker but I bought some cheap wine to add to various recipes. I bought a "Carlos Rossi" Burgundy. Well, I ended up drinking some and decided I liked it.

My question is this. In your humble opinion, is this a bad wine? Does this have some undesirable traits to it? The reason I'm asking this is because I'm going to have a large group of people over in a month and want to know if this would be an insult to serve to people? My brother knows a lot about wines, reading the magazines and going to wine tasting etc. I don't have the money to buy the more expensive wine and I think that we could go through quite a bit

I thought that maybe I was going in over my head posting to this group as I can see a lot of "wine aficionados" here. I have looked at other web based wine sites but I couldn't get an answer to the questions I have.

Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Your opinions please.

Thanks in advance,

Jeb

Jeb - A long time ago I drank that under the name Carlo Rossi's Red Mountain. At the time it was about 67 cents a gallon as I remember. It is what led me down the garden path to more expensive wines (woke up with too many headaches.) It is a little sweet for my taste now, but good for many non-serious wine drinkers. Don't let wine dweebs cow you - a good wine is one you like. Sort of like in the airplane business - a good landing is one you can walk away from... :-)

On the other hand, there are now lots of reasonably good wines on the market at very reasonable prices. Charles Shaw (2 buck Chuck) makes wine for $2.00 a bottle. Many good bottles can be had for under $10 - it is a personal quest of mine to find them all... There is also an old host's trick to pour more expensive wine at the beginning of the evening, then when everyone's taste buds have been anesthetized, start pouring the cheaper stuff.

Above all, have a good time!

Hi Jeb,

If you like it, it's not bad. People's taste's vary. My Dad drinks Carlo Rossi white of some kind, it's not really to my taste but he likes it well enough.

I certainly wouldn't want to have anyone over who would be insulted by basic fare that I like. That is to say, there's nothing wrong with it, you like it, so serve it. Anyone who feels insulted (although that's hard to imagine, honestly) should be sent packing anyway.

Since he's your brother, if he gives you a hard time, give him one back... :)

Naw, folks new to wine are usually welcomed on afw. Ask away.

Your welcome.

P.S. Jim, some of us have gotten kinda sensitive about being called wine dweebs. Others not, but why risk ticking off anyone? Just my 0.02 centimes, meant in a friendly way.

Don't forget to pour it into the now empty bottle of Screaming Eagle!
