TN: 2000 Grove Mill Pinot Gris

Some friends invited us over for grilled salmon last night's Memorial Day dinner and served this wine with dinner:

2000 Grove Mill Marlborough Pinot Gris n: minerals, tropical fruit and something Riesling-like p: rich, off-dry, loads of tropical fruit, balanced acidity, high alcohol

This wine was quite a surprise for various reasons. Firstly, Jean and I both found an Alsace-like character to it, though it lacked what I'd call a typical PG character. Secondly, although it came across as off-dry and somewhat heavy when drunk without food, it absolutely shone when paired with the salmon: the acidity came through and the whole impression was of a lighter wine. Thirdly, this wine seemed young, despite it being six years old and having been opened the night before! Even Jean, who normally has problems with aged white wines, had no problem whatsoever with this one.

Chalk up another win for NZ! Mark Lipton

NZ winemakers are currently planting Pinot Gris as fast as they are able - it really is in vogue with the ABS set.

Quite a range in styles from bone dry through off-dry to medium-dry.

Most very earthy / pear flavours - some a little insipid - others very unctuous.

PG has started hitting its straps here in NZ after slow beginnings from the mid-80s.

Should be starting to show up on international markets about now.
