TN Sula Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2007 (from India)

The Sula Vineyards Chenin Blanc, Estate bottled, Nashik (India),

2007is very light yellow and has 12.5% alcohol. It is cold fermented and is of about demi-sec Vouvray sweetness. The back label calls it light, fresh, and of fruity character and suggests for an aperitif or for lighter meals, salads. or desserts. The mfg date is Oct-2007. It comes in a 750 ml tall bottle in dark glass, and shaped much like many German wine bottles from the Mosel. A screw cap is used.

This wine has a very clean Sauvignon Blanc bouquet with considerable complexity. There is considerable sweetness which is balanced by soft acidity. It has the bouquet and taste of extremely ripe, but not overripe grapes. In many wines from the Loire that are this sweet, you get fruit with a honey-like character that comes from overripe grapes. This wine is unique and not easily compared with most Chenin Blanc grown elsewhere. I had it before a meal and with Tempura shrimp with a soy and Mirin dipping sauce. If you serve it with the main meal, it might work well with some of the Japanese and Chinese dishes that are fairly mild, have some fruit and sweetness, and do not use much or any hot pepper. It likely would work very well for a fruit salad of tropical fruits.

The one thing I can say for certain is that this wine is far different from any Chenin Blanc that I have ever had. Many Loires, especially those only a few months old, have quite harsh acidity even when sweet. I do not see how this wine could be sold considering the very low price of under $US 10 and the long distance to India. Perhaps it is just being introduced to see if a US market can be established for it. It was imported by an old line company of considerable repute - Dreyfus Ashby & Co of New York. It will surprise me if a large market develops for it because wines as sweet as this, even if of very good quality, are very hard to sell in many parts of the US.
