Weekend Reds

two red wines this weekend. A Burgundy with grilled whle chicken and a Cal Cab with grilled filets of beef.

2006 Henri Boillot Volnay 1er Clos de la Rougeotte-Brilliant red in the gla ss. Nose of muhrooms and cherries with background of minerals and flowers. Typically Volnay on the palatte being quite silky and lithe yet full throt tle flavors. Tart cherry, red raspberry, Asian spice and wet gravel on the finish. A fresh lively acidity kept it interesting and very food friendly . I loved this wine as it changed with each sip over a three hour period. It isn't usual for the two of us to knock back a bottle of wine (after sta rting with a glass or two of a starter wine) with dinner but we did and we were both looking for more. "A-"

2002 Chateau Montelena Estate Napa Valley Cabernet-Still deep dark purple w ith no hint of age. Nose of black coffee, Napa dust, cassis and blackberri es. Incredible depth withour being cloying this is quinesential Napa Caber net. Lots of cassis, blackcherry, espresso, a bit of tobacco and plenty of earthy black dirt notes on the palate. Smooth, refined tannins and very w ell balanced. "A"

Now that's a winning weekend. I don't think 2006 Burgs are going to be real long distance runners, but th ey seem to have not shut down and are drinking well. Montelena can be so good thanks for notes

I agree re:2006 Burgs. Lots of freshness in most that I've tried with plen ty of acidity to balance the ripeness. I have a fairly comprehensive verti cal of Montelena that I will be trying to put together this year. I have a few holes here and there but plenty of wines from the mid 70's through 200
