Weird wine names

Just received a sample from d'Arenberg wines - yet to try. The name is

"Noble Botryotinia Fuckelinia"

a semillon sauvignon blanc blend.

Thought it was a joke at first but Wikipedia says

formatting link

"Botryotinia fuckeliana is a plant pathogen, and the causal agent of gray mold disease. The specific epithet was named by mycologist Heinrich Anton de Bary in honor of another mycologist, Karl Wilhelm Gottlieb Leopold Fuckel. This species is better known as its anamorph, Botrytis cinerea."

Cheers!

Wow! Very weird in *two* senses:

  1. The Fuckeliana part of the name
  2. The wine being named after a pathogen, rather than having a brand name or named after its grapes or the location where it was grown.

Not only have I never heard of Karl Wilhelm Gottlieb Leopold Fuckel, but I never know that Botrytis cinerea had another name.
