Cleaning Straining bags..bleach ok?

When using a staining bag in winemaking how should you clean the bag....will bleach destroy the bag? Strained blueberries and want to know how to clean and sanitize bag for next use....appreciate the help!

Welcome fellow Wisconsinite, It kind of depends on what your straining bag is made out of. I cut up a nylon laundry bag into smaller bags which I put my fruit in during fermentation. I have bleached it, rinsed very, very well, and thrown it into the washing machine to wash - this usually works. If it is cotton, you can use bleach as well but it will and can break down the material. Darlene

I'm another one from Wisconsin. Kiel to be exact. I wash my staining bags in dishsoap and bleach. Rinse them very well. Good to go. As long as you don't soak them in a strong bleach solution, they should be fine.

I fill the sink with water and the "pink stuff" (although it's already sterile so that's redundant) and work it like you were hand washing clothing. Redo the same thing in a sink of clean water - do that twice in fact - inside out and outside in. Some of the specks need to be picked out by hand. Rinse under the faucet and voila, good to go for next time.

The bicycles hang from hooks in the garage ceiling. I hang the bag around the seat post to drip dry (seems nothing in this house is sacred from the influences of wine making) ;-)

I purchased several five gallon nylon paint strainer bags from Home Depot for around $2.50 each and just throw them in the washing machine. This seems to work fine for me. I do rinse them with clean water several time immediately after use to remove some of the stain. Aubrey

Where are you located? Our local Home Depot sells the same bags for $1!

Try an oxygen cleanser. You can get a butt load of it at the $1.00 store. wash the bag out and put in the cleanser for an hour or so. Works great!
