Price of local beers

Prompted by the post 'The King of Beers! Pabst' just how much do you pay for beer in your country?

Australian prices ( more precisely - Adelaide) roughly are,

Australian lager (Victoria Bitter, Tooheys etc)

24 case x 375ml bottles.........about $34.00 Less than 24...........about $2.50 each

Premium Aus lagers

24 case x 375ml bottles..........about $40.00 Less than 24..........about $3.00 each

Imported (Pilsner Urquell, Heinekin, Stella etc)

24 case x 330ml bottles..........about $48.00 Less than 24..............about $3.50 each

These prices include general discounts. You can find it for less sometimes. If you go up bush, Maree for example, you can pay nearly twice these prices.

Taxation includes a fixed excise amount (dont know what the figure is though) and a further 10% GST (a point of sale tax)

Wow, expensive!

A case of 24, 12oz., Pilsner Urquell at our local grocer is under $24...

Of course, at a bar those would be $3.50 apiece or more.

True, to some extent. Irrespective of exchange rates, An AUD$ dollar in Australia has about the same spending power as a US$ in the US. Steve W.

You might not be talking about the same $, though. As in Australian dollar versus US dollar.

I can get my favourite "local"(from Colorado), Rockies Brewing Mojo IPA for less than US$25 a case. Other favs of mine from Snake River and Grand Teton run about US$30. Hoegaarden White runs about US$40 and Pilsner Urquell hits the US$37 mark.

Hell these days, with the US dollar, to quote something I saw in the Wall Street Journal today, "boring its way to the center of the earth," the Aussie dollar and the Yank dollar ain't nearly as far apart as they once were. A couple years ago, one Aussie dollar was in the 50-something-cent range. Today, it's worth 77 American cents.

Back in the 70's, an Aussie dollar was worth about a buck fitty.

Geez! Maybe it's all the beer we drink here in Wisconsin, cause $9 a sixer for Pilsner Urquell is a lot... it's $5.58 a six down the street... same as Henieken, Becks, Pauli Girl, etc...

I just moved to Colorado from Dallas and I feel the same way. I was used to paying $6.99 / six for Hoegaarden, $2.99 a bottle for Orval, $6.00 for Paulaner, etc. Here most of those beers are *at least* two, if not 3 dollars more. I can't explain it except maybe liquor stores? Back in Dallas we had huge supermarket chains with buying power selling this stuff but since that is a no no for the time being in Colorado I think the small liquor stores just a) don't give a crap and b) don't have that kind of buying power.

Also the beer attitudes are a little strange here, I mean, one cannot swing a cat without hitting a micro or brewpub and people defintely drink vast quantities of beer but it still seems sort of "hush hush". Bars are dank, depressing places for people with no future or packed with TV screens, fried crappy food and obnoxious fans. There isn't any of the European sensibility of taking the kids out to the nice welcoming pub on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon for a bite and a pint. I love the craft brews but I certainly miss the great pubs I had access to in Dallas.
