Beer In The Evening Top 40 as per 23:38 15/10/07

Please can anyone explain how number 1 is arrived at?

The top 13 currently all have an average of 7.4 with 25 or more ratings.

  1. Royal Oak - Borough has 7.4 with 232 ratings
  2. Wenlock Arms - Hoxton has 7.4 with 272 ratings
  3. Ye Olde Mitre - Holborn has 7.4 with 213 ratings
  4. Highbury Vaults - Bristol '' '' '' 27 ratings
  5. Six Bells - St Albans '' '' '' 29 ratings
  6. Harp - Covent Market '' '' '' 200 ratings
  7. Odd One Out - Colchester '' '' 44 ratings
  8. Jerulasem Tavern - Clerkenwell '' '' 202 ratings
  9. Flowerpot - Derby '' '' 50 ratings
  10. The Arden Arms - Stockport '' '' 64 ratings
  11. Marble Arch - Manchester '' '' 117 ratings
  12. The Bridge - Topsham '' '' 39 ratings
  13. Pembury Tavern - Hackney '' '' 124 ratings

Surely you would think that The Wenlock Arms should be followed by The Royal Oak, Ye Olde Mitre, Jerulasem Tavern, Harp, Pembury Tavern,Marble Arch etc. And surely Highbury Vaults should be 13th!!

Also does anyone know how long it takes to get a new pub on the BITE site?

I am currently trying to get several local GBG entries on this site without any luck.

All things considered I think the rating system is skewed in some way (probably by the relative number of people available in London to visit the local pubs).

The Royal Oak is a decent enough pub, the Old Mitre I can't recall but it's probably also decent but the Wenlock is a tatty hole that turns over large numbers of different beers. I've had better beer elsewhere - the sole Derby entry has never turned out a bad drop on any visit I've ever made.

So no, in my opinion (and some notable CAMRA members I won't name) the Wenlock should NOT be anywhere highly placed and certainly not top.

Yes, there doesn't seem any rhyme or reason to this. It's not alphabetical, nor is it numerical. Perhaps it's "average" rating?

Anyway, there are quite a few pubs in Derby better than the Flowerpots - what about the Alex or the Brunswick?

Maybe, I did not make it clear, I was commenting on the BITE ratings and how they arrive at the different positions when everyone has the same average.

I was not bigging up the The Wenlock Arms, I have never been there.

I was just thinking better to have an average of 7.4 with 272 different ratings.

I guess it's possible that although they share the same AVERAGE value, that the ranking was done by sorting equivalent averages by VARIANCE.

That would mean if the Wenlock has the same overall score as the Highbury, the Mitre and the Royal Oak then a second ordering is taken across those equivalent averages, which decides which has the least spread (variance), i.e. the most consistently scored near to its average.

I have managed to get one listed

- it took a few months to appear. There are other pubs I have suggested previously to this that haven't appeared. Also, some reviews appear instantly, others take a while, some never appear. I've sent in questions and comments, never had a reply.

It's a very good website, but I get the impression that it's almost entirely automated with very little (if any) actual oversight from admin-type people.

Cheers for that Manky Badger

Perhaps I need to be more patient for the pubs to appear then.

I too have had pub reviews never appear. I know it does not like football clubs being mentioned even if the pub is just round the corner from a ground. It does not seem to like names being mentioned sometimes in reviews. Even if you have wrote something good about a perticular landlord or landlady.

I tend to paste the review into Word now before I post the review. If it does not appear straight away I can then edit the review to find the part the site does not seem to like.

Just spotted someone trying to be clever posting to the top 40 pubs....

He does however seem to have a point as I have had a few pop up's recently.

I've just suggested four pubs to them - let's see how long they take to appear. (The Royal Sussex & The Ashburnham Arms in Hastings, the Riverside in Ashford & the George in Bethersden)

If accepted, that'll give me nearly 50 reviews on BITE. I wonder what's the highest number anyone's got ?

All that I have suggested have appeared quite quickly

How quick? - Are we talking days or weeks?

The only one I've ever managed to get listed took months to appear.

I have completed just under 40 reviews in a little less than 3 months on BITE.

If you are looking for someone who has reviewed a lot and writes very comprehensive reviews.

Wow!!

BTW - tyou wouldn't be "real ale ade" who seems to have been in a lot of the places I have, would you :o)

Or in a similar vein, maybe the Royal Oak averaged 7.432, the Wenlock Arms 7.429 and so on. All rounded to a single decimal point would end up as 7.4.

That would fit. To be honest the stats as delivered look like an arbitrary set of numbers (what is commonly referred to as bollocks).

The guys over in the information department would probably either roll on the floor laughing or simply sniff and ignore everything that followed. No criticism of yourself for quoting.

There are better places to go.

Statistics, they often lie. When they don't they just conceal the truth.

An unhappy Wetherspoons customer tonight

looks like he's posted his message on many Wetherspoons pubs.

I didn't know you could post such large messages on BITE.

It appears he's a night worker with nothing better to do than post all that crap to every BITE Wetherspoon location countrywide.

Sorry Steve but I rate the place. I usually go there once or twice a year and the beer have never dipped below a 3 and is usually a 4. Ok the decor may be rather scruffy but I have no problems with that.

Each to his or her own, I suppose - but given my experience with EHOs I did find the sticky tables and carpet rather offputting...
