black bits in electric kettle

Just writing in case someone else has the same kettle and / or has had a similar problem.

I just got this kettle:

from a local asian grocery store. It works great, but there's one problem - I keep getting little black bits of something-or-other in my water.

I can't see under the heating element (and metal is all I can see with my eyes), but I imagine there's a plastic or rubber bit (maybe a gasket of some sort). Since the kettle looked like it had been sitting on the shelves for a long time, I'm guessing there may have been a gasket that dried up.

I have repeated the rinse, boil water routine at least 7 or 8 times, and have not seen any improvement.

Has anyone seen the same problem? Is trying to take it back my best option, or is this something that will go away if I keep at it?

I have the same thing, and I have to say I've never had any black bits in my water. Is yours made by Kamjove?

They're really tiny - from about the size of the little flecks that come out of Brita filters (yes - I'm sure that's not what they are) to just little tiny specks. If I do a bunch of rinses, sometimes they'll mostly go away, but they come back when I boil water in it again.

The one I have isn't a Kamjove. It's from Taiwan; I can't read Chinese, but the English company name given is "Full Means Town Co., LTD" - and the product description says "Warm-Up - A Thermostatic Pot". It looks more or less the same.

I think I'm going to try and see if the store will take it back.

and also a Kamjove tp-680

Both of them had the same issue. Looking into it further, I realized that the inside of the spout and the spout side was gunky... I assume remnants of the process used to make the kettle.

Any ideas on cleaning the spout? I don't think just boiling water in the kettle for a while is going to fix it (since I already tried that).

Try shoving a small bottle-brush inside the spout - see if that will dislodge any remaing bits.

Anyone know where one is likely to find something like a small bottle brush in the US? The baby bottle brushes I've found are too fat, and there is sometimes a brush for the bottle nipple as well, which is the right diameter, but too short.

A test-tube cleaner would probably work, but I'd most likely have to mail-order it.

This looks like pretty much what I need, but I'd have to mail-order it.

I thought the pet store might have something for something involving fish tanks, but the one by me didn't have anything.

I bought the thinnest one in the photo at Home Depot - the hang tag said it was for removing hair from sink drains. The other two I bought independently (not a set) at a local Ace hardware store.
