News groups/servers?

Hi--

The reason I use Google is because the sysad at my school acted dumb when I asked about newsgroups, and my 12 year-old *nephew* came to my rescue with the suggestion of Google.

I could talk to my sysad more convincingly, perhaps, if I knew the magic words (no, not "please" or "thank you") that would awaken his memory or at least give him something concrete to track down.

If my sysad persists in his know-nothing-ness, what should *I* know in order to figure out this issue by myself?

I realize this is a tea group, but talking about how to *access* this group doesn't seem *too* far off-topic to me. If this has been discussed in useful detail somewhere else, give me a link to the archive, and I'll go study the issue there.

Thanks,

james-henry

You might ask him for an NNTP server. With that, you could run a network news (Usenet) *client* on your own machine.

I use Google because it was free and easy. I know little or nothing about computer science and really don't have the time or the inkling to learn. I do respect those of you who understand those techniques and languages, however. I do think, though, that those of us who use Google should pressure Google to step up to the plate and get their group stuff worked out. Being optimistic and an older activist, I've known consumer pressure to work. Shen

If you just want a better way to access usenet, the best way to get it is to either pay for a service, or have your ISP give you a good news service. For those people who understand what that is, usually you just have to mention that you want access to Usenet or an NNTP server, but if you are on the internet, and I understand your question correctly, there are a variety of usenet providers out there from which you can choose. I like Giganews.
