Puerh steeping time.

Hi. I just purchased some Puerh at a local teastore, without any mentioning of which blend or origin it was. I don't think the people in the shop had a clue, really. So, before I start experimenting (I bought only a very small amount to begin with, is there anything like an average steeping time for puerh? And, as far as I know, it is well suited for resteeps, isn't it? I'd appreciate any comments. BTW, I also purchased som Rooibush, both "straight" and vanilla flavored. Any hints here, as well?

BTW, I'm talking of (small)leafed puerh, not cakes.

Wow, there are so many variables it is hard to give you a direct answer. I am assuming you have loose leaf black puerh. Green puerh is MUCH more sensitive to oversteeping. A lot of it also depends on what method you are using to brew the tea and how much leaf you are using. If you are brewing western style then 3-5 minutes would be a good starting point then add more or less leaf to taste. If you are brewing gungfu style with more leaf and less water then the steep times are drastically reduced. See

Yes, typically you can resteep puerh several times, the better the puerh the more steeps.

Ole,

Are you talking about the tea- and coffeestore in Dronningens gate, Trondheim? I have bought some tea there myself, including pu-erh. My experience is just like yours, they don't have a clue. Their tea are of dubious quality too, IMO. If this is your first experience with pu-erh, don't give up, try to order some from a reliable source - Mike Petro's site will give you some ideas where to start. Or I could send/bring you some myself. I am going to Trondheim this christmas. When I dring loose-leaf cooked pu-erh like the one they sell, I usually just put som in a cup, add boiling water and start drinking, adding more hot water when needed. Or I use a filter cup and steep it for 3 - 5 minutes. Gong-fuing this pu-erh is not worth the effort.

Personally I'm not much in favour of Rooibos, but I do drink some from time to time, if I crave a hot teaish thing before bedtime. Try steeping the Rooibos in just boiled water for 5 to 10 minutes.

Simply amazing! How did you know?

I have bought some tea there myself, including pu-erh.

Yes, I have checked it out. Thanks a lot, Mike, for putting up your site in the first place, also for obviously being such a dedicated puerh fan (beyond what I thought possible until now :-)).

Or I could

I'll give this a try. Regarding your kind offer, I'll get back to it, but then I'd rather contact you outside this group.

Although being fully aware of the health benefits of green teas, it does not seem to help my main health problem, which is insomnia. As I like a cup of hot something in the evening, tea does no longer seem to be the thing for me, although I did try some decaff green from Upton, but it wasn't my thing, really. So now I thought I'd try something different, like rooibos or perhaps puerh from the third steep on (in the evening, that is).

best of wishes, ole k
